Poetry murmurs along in an undertow to life—Margaret Kiernan

  • Juan Re Crivello: Do you think poetry is back in fashion?

Margaret Kiernan: Poetry is neither fashionable nor unfashionable. It murmurs along in an undertow to life.

  • J. R. C.: Is your poetry created daily, or do you wait to be inspired to write it?

Margaret Kiernan: Yes, I write daily, and I have a schedule. I write poetry daily, or I revise or edit it daily. Ideas come too, and I keep paper and pen all over the house, even in the garden shed. I jot down lines or words, or ideas.

  • J. R. C.: What is your next publishing project?

Margaret Kiernan: My next project is the manuscript preparation for my next poetry collection. I am also seeking a publisher for my fiction stories, some are as long as thirteen thousand words, and others are one thousand words. That is my big goal.

  • J. R. C.: What city do you live in, and can you describe your favorite bar or café?

Margaret Kiernan: The city/town I live in is named Mullingar. It is fifty miles from Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. It is in an area of many lakes, often called Lake County, set in green pasture lands. My town has many cafes and bars; my favourite cafe is named Cafe Grace. I recently did a reading there. Previously, the building was a church. It is very cool.

I would like to share an interview about my poem “Red-orange Gauge” published on Chewers by Masticadores in 2024.

Red-orange Gauge by Margaret Kiernan

Today I spooned jam from a jar,
amber liquid crab-apple
autumn crossed my eye,
touched my arm in grassy dust
I felt the heat
                    drop down
light painted in golden brown
eking  into corners
slipping onto a road
going out.
