Rose of Love by Tony Ashenden

Time flies! Awake! Arise!
The morning Rose of Love arrives
and merrily the night gowned ghost
of yesteryears held fears depart.

Your waking smile caresses mine
joins our hearts aglow with youth
and youth as ever will dare to love;
with divine unreason drink the wine.

Like the sun blest fruit that goes to press
shall be the wine of our future’s best
we both will drink, for soul’s awake
will purpose find and fitly celebrate.

Your eyes on mine –what love is writ?
My eyes on you –what love is found?
Even now when leaves burn gold
beauteous love still seeks us out.

The mocking bell strikes four times ten
and then again eight times to rest.
Surely, now you’ve passed the test?
The silence after ring implores –no more!

Haughtily the Rose of Love holds up her head
and tells the bell go chime the dead!
For we are wed in love eternally
born to make the Rose of Love our legacy.
