death of a hero by Bogdan Dragos

Published by

on

he woke up to the sounds

of digging

of shovel hitting dirt

and splitting it

and scooping

tender

wet

soil

but there were no such

things in the

room with him

Just darkness

He looked around

and got up

and paced towards the

desk at the foot of the

bed

turned on the

lamp on it

and immediately

the first thing to

morph into his field of

vision

was of course

the bottle of whiskey

then the empty

glass

He nodded to

himself

The first sip reminded him

that he’d promised

to show his little girl what

the underside of a car

looked like

Well damn,

yet another promise that won’t

be fulfilled

The child was at that age

where exploration is the main

thing to life

and she wanted to know what

the underside of a car looked

like

They didn’t own a car

but daddy did own a phone

like everybody else these days

and he did try to use it

to take a photo of the

underside

of some random car parked in

the streets

but alas,

the owner spotted him from afar

and thought he was up to no

good and ran up to him

and wouldn’t allow any explanations.

It all went straight to

punches and shoves

What a failure

Can’t even show his little explorer

what the underside of

a car looked like

He poured another glass

and drank it

One day the kid will grow up

and all the illusions of

Daddy being some hero will

be shattered, won’t they?

He poured another

glass and drank it
