Ever Young at 48 by Tony Ashenden

Six times a sacred number

plus eight years of the fourth decade.

Is this now a watershed to look back

To say what’s done, undone, missed or forgot?

You know that the mirror always agrees

And you never ask – it always tells

And what will it say now you are forty-eight?

Are the eyes clear, have a sober gazing look

Does the body show conviction, is the purpose

Set in the mouth, and the shoulders square?

Are your hands free to rub the genie’s lamp

To invoke your  wishes?

But beware, be cautious now!

Else be tied to life thirsting pledges that renew each year

Now be self the best you know

and love that cupid causing parasite

which multiplies in blood

unfelt to breed the madness

we cannot get enough of..
