Hunger Poems by Mary Bone

Dumpster Diver

Food became scarce.
My dreams were full of bargains
I had clawed through the dumpsters of life.
Hunger was real.
Fights broke out around me.
The will to live prevailed,
as crumbs found their way to my stomach.
Discarded flowers added some beauty to
the bleakness
in my cardboard box reality,
I call home.

Rat Village

The last morsel was consumed in
rat village.
We played solitaire on the streets.
Hunger does that.
A gnawing sensation
from deep within me played its own music.
My rat pack was on the lookout for
the next game and the next meal.

Ketchup Soup

The nights of hunger
Caused my weight to fall off.
My evening stew was made
from ketchup packets
a restaurant gave me.
A good soup bone would add
some flavor to this boiling water.
All I needed was some crackers to
add a little crunch.
