Triggered by April

You think you are okay and tell yourself that you can get through it alone, you don’t need to burden others
You got this and there’s nothing the can stop you, you don’t need help
You’re in therapy and know all the techniques to get yourself through them, you get through them
Tell everyone you are doing great because you got this

Just one word, one thought, one moment, it pops up
Standing there for all to see you crying, hyperventilating
Suddenly you’re there, back against the door crying and terrified
You ran away from the first time when he stopped himself from choking you
You’re mind knows you are not there, but your feelings are right in hyper vigilant mode again, right in the thick of it
His hands are around your neck after he stops you from running and escaping
You think this is it, my life is going to end
You remember every thought, every feeling
Like your nervous system has it stuck in a rhythm
Rhythm never changes, you just usually can yourself out of it

Then a voice tells you “you’re safe”
You snap out of it, back to present, knowing that you are safe
You chose yourself in the end
You didn’t lay hands on him, stayed faithful
You remember everything that has happened since
No longer stuck in replay
The movie finally came to an end
You’re back and then remember the day you chose yourself, chose to leave
The moment that the rest of your life began
