TWO HIGHBALLS

Two highballs at the tepee bar
suspended over hungry halibuts
and starfish.
Names and dates,
and dollar bills on rotting wood,
around an image of Popeye
giving us the finger.
Playing “she loves me, she loves me not”
with the water spots on empty glasses,
she then wipes the counter with a humid towel.

Empty glass,
signal for a refill.
The guy at the table, eyes closed,
is humming –
while the cigarette dangling from his mouth
is about to drop its full weight in ash.
One day I’ll find a song for you.
Today I’ll sit and drink.
