The sky was pale yellow
Not the usual sunlight
And the air was complicated by
Something other than smoke or fog
It was a stage set for
Skilled actors to take a fall
I was sitting in my car
Windows up, AC on
Stereo playing a Baroque fugue
On period instruments
Until starkly interrupted by a
Breaking news announcement
All too common in California
Another 6.1 earthquake
Aftershocks likely
Tsunami possible
Concerns of imminent peril
To beachfront properties
Not the right time to
House shop in Malibu
Or to visit that Farmer’s Market
Held under the freeway
Maybe I should just cruise on home
And park the car in the garage
Gather more news on television
Was that an aftershock?
Or just the sound and feel
Of my garage door closing
Like I directed it to do
What if this news was a fiasco,
Everyone closing their garage doors
At exactly the same time?
Oh how the truth can hurt!
Now I’m back in my recliner chair
AC on, TV on, time for a nap
The great outdoors can wait
