Lighthouses by Robbie Cheadle

I enjoy lighthouses very much and today I am showcasing two lighthouses from my visits to the United Kingdom as well as a painting of a lighthouse I created for my mother’s 87th birthday present.

The photographs below are of the Roman Lighthouse (Pharos) built in the 1st century AD. This lighthouse is one of only three surviving Roman lighthouses in the entire world and is also the oldest lighthouse in Britain. It can be seen at Dover Castle in Kent. I have been lucky enough (or persistent enough) to see it twice. The purpose of this lighthouse was to guide Roman ships safely across the English Channel into the port of Dubris (modern-day Dover).

During my visit to Brighton in 2025, I was fortunate enough to see the Beachy Head Lighthouse. I like the lighthouse and I loved the cliffs. I loved the cliffs so much I agreed to paint the lighthouse for my mother. My real purpose was to paint the white chalk cliffs. I also enjoyed painting the water in its numerous and shifting shades.

Portland Bill Lighthouse by Derrick Knight

Photographs of Happisburgh & Southwold Lighthouses by Pete

Pete has a wonderful blog, beetleypete, where he shares all sorts of interesting posts about music, funnies, photography, and also serialised stories. This is what Pete says about these two lighthouses: «The first is two photos of Happisburgh Lighthouse. Happisburgh is a coastal village on the eastern side of Norfolk. Local people pronounce the name ‘Haze-borough’. I have no idea why that is.  The village is known mainly for its impressive lighthouse, which dates from 1791. It is still the oldest working lighthouse in the east of England, and tours can be arranged through the volunteers who run it.

The second is Southwold Lighthouse, in Suffolk. Southwold is a genteel town on the East Coast. Recent popularity with visitors from London, and others buying second homes there, has also made it a desirable destination, as well as prohibitively expensive to buy property in the town. Unusually, Southwold’s lighthouse is in the town centre, rather that at the edge of the coast. It still operates today, and has been seen in many films and TV series too.«

Cape Bear Lighthouse by Darlene Foster

This is what Darlene says about this lighthouse: «The Cape Bear Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island was built in 1881. On the night of April 14, 1912,  Cape Bear Lighthouse and Marconi Station became the first land station to hear the distress signal from the Titanic as it was sinking. 

I love lighthouses and enjoyed visiting this historic site on my visit to PEI in 2022. A small replica is on the site as well.«
