Captured moments,
snapshots of life,
wrapped up in brown paper and silk ribbon,
sitting by the Christmas tree.
Bright eyed and bushy tailed,
sleep is overrated, for a chance
that St Nick might find you
under the mistletoe.
Letters to Santa
after all these years wondering
if he ever got the memo.
I can’t wait!
Remnants of cookie crumbs, half-drunk milk,
an empty glass of brandy
assure that elves made a stir and
Mrs. Claus was always nearby.
But Santa Claus?
I haven’t lost my spirit,
I’m not sure why.
I wait patiently
by the fireplace once again with
a photograph and note of Santa and me
when I was just young.
I can’t wait forever and cry over spilt milk,
over what once was a shadow of a man
I barely knew, only heard about and
visited in my dreams.
I have grown older and not jaded
by wishful thinking
but thankful for stepping out
from the depths of despair
as I turn on the light.
The tree sparkles,
the moon glimmers
as I see the reindeer in plain sight,
nibbling at branches of brown bark and apples,
grateful to be alive and gifts from Mother Nature.
Letters to Santa now live in
memories and photographs
that sit on my mantel
while I eat milk and cookies
and skip or sip brandy slow.
