He Didn’t Know We Felt That Way   by Gerald Yelle

He gave me a compost starter kit he said not to open till Christmas. It smelled like cow manure and cedar chips. I put it under the sink and joined the online discussion as to whether or not he interfered too much in Maggie’s business. I said yes, at times he did, but I tried to downplay the issue in light of his generosity. I said look at Lord Covington and Darius Rudolph. They give advice but that’s all they give. And what about Wayne Sniffle. He can’t get out of his own way. And Jeremiah Duda: he’s been known to stick his nose in other people’s compost. The same goes for you, Min Nguyen and Karen Brownie-Whack. Shawn Bevacqua’s been a busybody since the day he got his permit. I heard him tell Maggie not to mix her onion skin with kitchen grease. And didn’t the rest of you tell her not to start her compost until she finished reading the owner’s manual? I’d say we all interfere in Maggie’s business. I don’t know what else you’d call it.
