On Time by Dominik Slusarczyk

The only you who exists is the you you are right now. The you you were yesterday died and is now gone. That you will never exist again. It is a defining characteristic of moving through time that you change over time.

The you of the future does not exist either. You have no way of knowing what you who exists tomorrow will be like. You might think you will be the same tomorrow as you are today, but what is to stop you from breaking your leg later tonight? What is to stop you from dying later tonight? You might not exist at all tomorrow.

So all we can really know is the present. We can try to predict the future based on the present, but we would need a huge amount of information to do that.

If a car is travelling 70 mph right now, you might think that it will travel at 70 mph ten seconds from now. But what if it is accelerating? If it is accelerating, it will travel faster than 70 mph ten seconds from now. If we know the exact amount it was accelerating, we could say that the car will move at 72 mph ten seconds from now. But what if the driver takes his foot off the accelerator? What if he puts his foot down even harder? We try to predict based on the present, but things can change between now and the future, so we can’t predict the future with any certainty

Everything slowly deteriorates. The forces in the world work against them and wear them down. The wind hammers the house and dislodges roof tiles. The rain hammers the shed and wears down the planks of wood. If something exists in time, it is at the mercy of the forces that move through time, so anything that exists in time will slowly deteriorate over time.
