Nothing is found in the histories
written by the victors.
The only testimony is pain and fear
buried deep in their bodies,
and memories haunted by shrieks that
return each night in dreams.
A spider web hanging in the corner of the high window
clings its structure to the iron bars,
trembling.
A fly succeeds in escaping.
Author’s Note:
During Taiwan’s White Terror era, political dissidents were often imprisoned and tortured into forced confessions—atrocities that, of course, never appeared in official records.
