“Our First Reunion – Circa 1970” by Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

Arise, early
Dress, meticulously
Yesterday - butterflies, breath held, shaking
Today – “getting down” to a favorite song

On a never-ending street, familiar sights, nerves calmed.

Lobby’s plush chair with a view
Fidget with hair

Newspaper upside down.

Taxi flow erratic
Positively correlated - disappointment, tension, doubt

Alas, a single, red cab dispels all
Passenger, but a profile
then Afro-to-toe, it was him

Newspaper crumpled.

Passing through the door
recalling “Hot fun in the summertime” 1
cool movie theaters temper steamy, youthful love
thrilling togetherness
agonizing "eternal" separation

time. stands. still.
bodies, lips, locked; eyes closed
cologne intoxicating; knees buckling

At check-in, giddy like newlyweds,
dizzy from cycles of tenderness, passion

The University bell sounded the hour
Five blissful days...countdown began
Sad heart keeps beat.
