«Cradle» by Noel Aquino
I wish to return home to nights
where Christmas carols fill the atmosphere
watching my grandmother dear
sparkle among yellow, red, and green lights,
and the smell of firework smoke
in this lilac memory,
is full of laughter and hope.
I wish to sleep among the sound
of bottle crown tambourines,
clanking, and singing are like stars twinkling,
and in between
are my grandmother’s lullabies,
crickets humming,
comforting gaze under the blanket of her eyes.
I wish the feeling of love
won’t wane into sepia memories,
for nothing would compare to the swaying
while lying on the bamboo bed
of my childhood,
reminder of her hands,
thin, sure, secure, and cradling.
Now, she is watched over by the stars,
visited only when I am dreaming.
