NOTES ON A SKETCH MADE AT A PASTURE’S EDGE

Half moon in a lake blue sky
Reflecting clouds
Crows circling shadows
Over cut paths of September
Dry hay bales shade woven
Purplish blue on a broad flank hill
At the field’s edge Queen Anne’s Lace
Butter-colored golden rods
Seed laden milkweeds
Waiting on the stalled breath
Of a breeze for their flight
Between oak trees a deer lightly steps
Crickets sing in the tall grass along a stone wall
A bluejay sings liquid notes
And I wait, listen, and listen again
Giving myself the patience to watch
An orange belted bumble bee
Settle on the curling ribbon of purple asters
At the pasture’s edge
I am unburdened by the day’s labor of my hands
