Author’s Description

The Narrow Path series is a fantasy adventure featuring a 16th century widower, driven near madness through grief, and three adopted children who embark on a quest to rid the world of an evil that has been growing for several thousand years. On one level, we will be swept up in a fast-moving cat and mouse game with an eccentric fallen angel who is tired of the war and is now willing to risk everything to kill his nemesis, the Great Bear.

On a deeper level, a new physics has been woven through “The Song of the Bear.” It also reunites us with an old friend and introduces us to the narrow path which lets us experience a poetic life by finding harmony with this world through a journey.

Book two, “A Ship Called Eros”, started as a project for a breast cancer patient of mine who needed hope for the tough days ahead. I modeled portions of the book on her life so that she could see herself in the story. It asks the question, what would life look like if we were totally free? What would it feel like to be all in, in a poetic journey where everything you do and see has deep meaning? The book was a great comfort to my patient. Her life was also deeply moved by “The Song of the Bear” and she lived her final days running the narrow path with the sun on her face and a song in her heart.

The final book, “The Lake of Fire”, gives us a feel for what the next life will be like. I give the clearest vision of heaven I have seen, written for my children so that they could find hope during dark times. As for hell, if you are a Dante fan, we will give you a run for your money!

Dive into the narrow path and I guarantee an emotional roller coaster where you will be pumping your fist in triumph one moment and shedding tears the next. If you are not careful, a deeper author may touch your heart in ways I could not have imagined. My readers have shared this experience with me and it is beautiful.

The most popular quote with the readers is, “Do not linger John . . . the narrow path only goes forward and it stops for no one.”

CHAPTER

Sixteen Centuries Later, in the Black Forest of Germania

John stood in an open field, watching the evening fog weave through the wall of trees marking the edge of safety. He stood tall, just shy of seven feet, with shoulders as broad as those of an ox. His heavy arms, built strong and hard from a life of labor on the farm, hung loose at his sides. Coal-black hair flecked with grey swayed to a somber rhythm on his shoulders. It wafted across a heavy black beard with a hint of red that had woven itself into years of neglected growth.

He took a deep breath. The air was damp with the promise of spring, and the musk of winter leaves fallen long ago filled his nostrils. In the distance, a shape appeared and then vanished like a shadow, moving along the edge of the forest circling the meadow.

John could feel the heaviness of his boots in the wet ground, and his stomach churned as he tried to turn and run-but he could not. His black trousers and work vest encased him as if he were wrapped in iron wrought from the depths of the earth. His white shirt billowed in the breeze as if to feign the movement he could not muster.

The moon made the fog at the edge of the trees glow. And through those fallen clouds, the head of a great bear slowly emerged. The muscles on its face rippled like waves on the ocean. He was three times the size of any bear that John had ever seen. His legs reminded John of tree trunks. He met the bear’s eyes with his own, his feet frozen to the ground by fear. He felt naked. Barely able to breathe, he felt his heart torn between …….

The books are available on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback formats.

Book One of the Narrow Path Series: The Song of the Bear

The Song of the Bear is intended as a therapeutic fiction, which is amply accomplished. As an oncologist and novice philosopher, Dr. Mark Tungesvik noticed his patients needed a bridge from the shock and despair of finding out they had cancer, to the hope of a new life. After over a decade of supporting his patients both physical and spiritually, Dr. Tungesvik wrote this book to capture the essence of moving out of a dark and challenging place to a reality where hope can be found. This story begins with John, a man driven close to madness from grief after the death of his wife. We take John’s hand as we walk with him through his grief as our reality begins to meld with his. As we follow John, we are swept into an adventure where nothing is as it seems. We must relearn our reality with John piece by piece. We are asked to trust in the narrow path – a path that only reveals a short distance ahead and promises certain death if we slow down or turn back.
