Featuring «More Inclinations» and «Natural Inclinations» by Kevin Cowdall

More Inclinations is a followup to Natural Inclinations. Natural Inclinations was inspired by my appreciation of (and concern for) the natural world in all its elements. More Inclinations continues this. Lots of people have asked me if I’d ever written a poem about . . . (various animals, insects, flowers, etc), so a follow-up collection seemed a simple response.

Sample Poems from More Inclinations

The Marauding Raccoon

Nearby a woodland stream,
all but invisible amid the darkness
of a cloudless, moonless sky,
a masked, ringed-tailed marauder
sallies forth from its den
amid the hollow of a tree.

It will forage far and wide
within its familiar territory,
ever wary of larger predators,
skittish at the slightest noise,
a resourceful and industrious,
omnivorous creature of the night.

The Chirruping Cricket

I sit on the porch,
surrounded
by the noises of the night.

A myriad of creatures
scurrying
in the fields all around.

A discordant backdrop,
invisible
in the blanketing darkness.

All save one harmonious sound,
rising
clear above all the others.

A nocturnal calling song;
distinctive
trills and pulsing chirps.

A chorus of male crickets,
chirruping
to attract a mate.
