Empty
In the bare, uncared-for house,
my footsteps sounded hollow.
The vacant hallway was
devoid of wall hangings,
as were the dusty rooms.
An abandoned car rested
in the cavernous garage,
seemingly exhausted.
Forsaken toys lay on the floor
of a stark bedroom.

1 to 8 and 8 to 1
Ants.
A swarm.
In my ears.
Blocking out the sun.
I close my mouth, eyes.
I need to pinch my nostrils.
The flying insects pin-prick my flesh
Thank the Lord, I have my shorts on.

We gather around her in the white room.
Two youths fidget with fear and tension
Daphne calls me to her side.
“It’s time to say goodbye.”
“I can’t believe that.”
“It’s true, darling.”
