Against profiles of other leaders, drawn from different times in history, Jesus emerges as a role model whose example resonates powerfully with all of us leaders – in corporate boardrooms, in government, in social causes, in sports teams, in families, in every facet of life.
Review
Ignatius Fernandez’s well-written book Jesus Christ: True Leader and Perfect Gentleman highlights the conflicting groups and philosophies of Jesus day and shows Jesus as superior to all others as a leader and as a gentleman (defined by Cardinal Newman as «one who never inflicts pain» and by Confucius as «one who thinks of others before himself»), a pattern we would do well to follow. Fernandez posits that the human life of Jesus was as much a demonstration of His unconditional love as was his death for fallen humanity. It is this human life of Jesus, characterized by love, wisdom, and humility, which is the model for leadership roles today.
Using sayings and examples from the lives of historical and contemporary leaders, Fernandez shows the practicality of Jesus’ leadership style and the superiority of Jesus’ life. In different chapters, he discusses the parables that Jesus told, the lives of his disciples and contemporaries, and his gentlemanly and compassionate treatment of women and children (marginalized groups in that day) to show the excellence of Christ’s leadership.
The actionable outcomes of the study are to foster gentlemanly and humble leadership qualities patterned after Jesus and to encourage leaders to learn lessons from Christ’s life in order to lead others with the grace and wisdom which characterized the life of Jesus: in short, to succeed as leaders in the same way that Jesus did–in the strength of humility, in love that won’t wait, and in mercy that seeks positive change for others.
Readers who take Fernandez’s book seriously and follow its precepts will become true leaders and perfect gentlemen, after the role model of Jesus, who excelled in leadership and in affecting change.
