Between Countries
My grandparents pack their suitcases in the country of the dead. They board a vortex to the border town between life and death. They open a hole in the wall of her hospital room so my mother can step through. My mother sees the hole. She sees her parents through the haze of medication. She is afraid. She decides to leave a little bit at a time. Her pancreas puts on a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses and dives through the hole. Her mind doesn’t want to miss the party. It leaves an out-of-order sign and a box of jumbled words. Her spine is annoyed at holding everything together while the rest of my mother dances away, but stays out of a sense of responsibility. My mother is between the country of the living and the country of the dead. She is tired. She wants to sit in her mother’s lap. All she needs is a little spine. She will have it soon.
