The Money Store by Gerald Yelle

Blinded by the window’s glare it felt like I was pushing one door into another and I felt like I had to apologize. Someone chuckled and said that was alright. My eyes adjusted but the place was nothing like I remembered. All the shelves were pushed to the side and the lights were off. The owner came over. I said it didn’t look like they were open. He said they weren’t. They were having a team-building function for employees. I said he had all this space but what happened to all the equipment he used to sell. What happened to the bullion cubes? He said he was downsizing his product line and expanding his sphere of influence. I was skeptical. I’d seen too many businesses fold after expanding. I said you have to be careful. He said he couldn’t afford to be careful. I said, “Of course not. You’re too busy to be careful.” He nodded.
