Eons ago, the alligator ruled like an immortal.
Slow-aging Amphibian, which explains survival
from a Yucatan asteroid’s next-day dust cloud.
Arose to devour those weakened or dead.
Thick tail to counter-balance attacks.
Stubby brute reigns in swamps, dines in bogs.
Claws to scale banks, webbed to swim bayous.
Armored hide hardening through millennia.
Indomitable except post-cranial kill spot:
the dinosaur’s Achilles heel, but a few more
evolutions will seal off its final vulnerability.
As the warm seas rise, they venture
from Everglades and marshland, emerge
from lowlands. Rule golf course water hazards,
invade those exclusive clubs. Crunch bones
of any creature strolling soft gardens.
Content with new habitats in theaters and malls.
Invincible enough to feast on the world.
