A Town   by Gerald Yelle

Has a building that makes sashes for window shades. The one next to it makes circular saws. After that there’s a pizza house. Then there’s a cider house. There’s a tree where they grow apples. A factory that makes gloves. A tree with cones next to a tree making acorns. Next to a building that keeps people out of the weather. One that treats ailments and takes the bumps out of water. There’s a tree making sap –a whole row of trees making sap, next to a building that makes clean clothes. Scattered throughout the town are buildings where people get their clothes dirty. And buildings where they eat. There are trees with squirrels. Buildings with cars inside. One building has a person in it. Another has two. Three are in a third. There’s one with a hundred. A tree with broken branches. A building with a faucet. A tree that makes noise in a town that prides itself on silence.

Where it’s always dark because people keep their eyes closed. Even while eating. They visit the museum of porches and poke in each other’s affairs. They keep a pickle on the edge of a plate.
