«It happens organically, and I certainly don’t fight that.» – Ken Tomaro

JR Crivello: Do you think poetry is back in fashion?

Ken: Maybe on some academic level, but as far as I’ve seen, no. Even with the hundreds of literary journals to choose from, poetry still seems to be a hard sell to readers. People know poetry exists, but I feel like it’s still very much an underground thing.

JR Crivello: Is your poetry created daily, or do you wait to be inspired to write it?

Ken: That depends on how much my mind is cluttered. I was typically creating several poems a day, but sometimes life gets in the way. For me, it happens organically, and I certainly don’t fight that.

JR Crivello: What is your next publishing project? Could you tell us how it came about?

Ken: I have a couple of chapbooks coming out later this year but right now I’m working on a second audio project where I create short videos and have a few people read my poetry. This one is broken into 3 parts involving childhood memories. It came from the first audio project I did and was so pleased with the range of voices, I decided to try another one.

JR Crivello: What city do you live in, and can you describe your favorite bar or café?

Ken: Farview Park which is a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. My favorite café/coffee shop would be one with old wood, dark-ish lighting and maybe a table or two around the corner where I can hide from the crowd and watch people coming and going.

Elevator-out of order

there were 17 steps
in her daily life
narrow, falling apart
over the years
the banister hanging
by a thread
patched over
and patched over
but never fixed correctly
like many things
in her life
