- Juan Re Crivello: Do you think poetry is back in fashion?
Anjie Williams: Poetry has never been out of fashion. As with anything, the style changes. The latest style is spoken word (not to be confused with rap). That is the younger generation’s form of poetry. It seems to be catching on in the mature generations. It is prevalent in the entertainment world as well. Entertainers, such as Tupac Shakur, perform spoken word but with music. Spoken words allow the entertainer/poet to be a little freer with their expression. The cadence of the words makes expression easier than other forms of poetry.
- JRC: Do you write poetry daily, or do you write as ideas come to you?
Anjie Williams: I try to write daily. I like prompts. Prompts start my creativity juices flowing. I write as ideas come up, as well.
- JRC: What is your next publishing project? Could you tell us how it came about?
Anjie Williams: I am currently working on a history poetry book. Most people will not read a book, but will read a short poem if it is presented correctly. I’m a crafter. I plan to promote it through my greeting cards and other crafting ideas.
- JRC: The city you live in, and a description of your favorite bar or café.
Anjie Williams: I live in Clarksville, Tennessee, by way of Birmingham, Alabama. The best café I’ve experienced is White Bison located in Nashville, Tennessee. It has a cozy atmosphere that allows you to write freely or have a meeting. It is not noisy, and the ambiance is magnificent. Sitting outside is just as calming. The variety of coffee drinks, smoothies, and food is just as awesome as their ambiance. The hour and 30-minute drive is worth it.
A Phoenix’s Song by Anjie Williams-Brown
You think you’ve hurt me
You think I no longer exist
You think I can’t rise above your tricks
I’m a Phoenix, I always survive
I emerge from the flames
My wings are intact
My soul is in tune
I am never consumed or heavy with anger
Water was once my enemy
But as with anything
I came, I conquered
You came to
Kill
Still
Destroy
I am a Phoenix
You can’t keep me down
Cause I will always rise
