Ice floe by Amber Drake

I stand precariously balanced
On a small island of ice
Adrift in an ocean
With no shore in sight
Dark green water
As far as my eyes can see
The smallest of waves
Threatens my footing
Many times I
Overbalance and tumble
Into the cold sea
Water closes over my head
Fills my mouth and nose
The taste of salt makes me gag
Stubbornly I cling to the ice
Clawing the slippery surface
Fighting to climb back up
Until I lie gasping and retching
Safe, once more, from the sea
After untold ages
I stand up and try to
Find my footing again
Vowing that this time I’ll
Manage to keep standing
When the next wave hits
