After ten generations of magicians
pulled fifteen times as many
generations of rabbits
out of hats,
rabbits can now do this on their own,
popping up in places unexpected
even to them.
Even so, they’re now rare enough
in my city neighborhood
that seeing one on my block
is a bit remarkable, like
suddenly spying a fairy or sprite,
motionless, staring back
from a neighbor’s front yard.
Then, strangely,
one walked next to me
on a strip of grass yesterday,
so I slowed on the sidewalk—
we traveled in tandem
for about ten feet
before it stopped,
obviously wondering
what the hell it was doing.
