The distant highway sad with traffic,
quieter than expected.
In the nearby parking lot,
rain spreads its voice,
a widening sheen of sibilants
lapping at his asphalt ears.

On the roof, it tip-toes,
trying to leave or enter a room.
Depending on the story:
Thief, affair, unpaid rent.

Where the walls stand alone
there is no closure.
The landlord stares
at what remains abandoned.

Over puddles rain draws thousands
of circles that intersect thousands of circles
until there are no longer circles
proclaiming the dizzying perfection of gravity,
the silent echoing tangle of arcs.

Chapters are thrown out of passing
car windows of shoulderless roads
that offer pages of regret
that flutter in the passing wakes of traffic
before sinking into weeks of weeds.

The windshield is perforated with droplets.
Weeping lens repeatedly lay the sky
on its soot-spectacled back.

A hand reaches out to move a side mirror
to adjust the past. The dance of rain,
sparks against cold skin of that other life,
but only for a sad moment.
